The closing concert of Charlotte Master Chorale’s 71st Season puts the spotlight on what sets choral music apart: text. Chamber Singers’ Poets highlights the work of six lyricists who have played an out-sized role in the choral world: William Shakespeare, Laurence Hope, Sara Teasdale, Ogden Nash, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Maya Angelou.
Settings range from the light-hearted (Eric Whitacre’s Animal Crackers) to the masterful (Matthew Harris’s Shakespeare Songs), the powerful (Jake Runestad’s Why the Caged Bird Sings) to the inspirational (Tom Trenney’s Maya’s Prayer for Peace). Audiences will be left with a refreshed appreciation for the power of the written word and ability of choral music, beautifully sung, to lift those words off the page and into our hearts and minds.
